The Quadruple Betrayal

From Epiphanius, Panarion 30.16.8–9, regarding the Ebionite view of the “True Church” vs. the “Pauline” churches:

“They say that they are the Successors of the Apostles, and they themselves are the Disciples of the Lord… But they call Paul a Deceiver and an Antichrist, and they say that he has abolished the Law of God.”

From Epiphanius, Panarion 29.7.3, regarding the Nazarenes’ rejection of the labels given to them by the followers of Paul:

“They do not call themselves Christians—for that is a name which became current in Antioch—but they call themselves Nazoraeans, as if from the name of the place Nazareth. But they are in all things Jews and nothing else.”

From Epiphanius, Panarion 30.17.4, regarding the Ebionite claim that Paul’s teachings were a direct corruption of the “True Church” established by James:

“They say that James, who was the brother of the Lord, was the first of the Apostles, and that the other Apostles were his disciples. They say that Paul was not an Apostle, and that he has filled the world with a false doctrine.”

From Epiphanius, Panarion 30.15.1–4, regarding the Ebionite rejection of the “New Covenant” as preached by Paul:

“They say that they are Jews, and they are like the Jews… but they say that they have been Chosen by God, and that they alone are the Remnant of the true Israel. They maintain that the Apostle Paul was a Transgressor of the Law, and they cast out his Epistles entirely.”

From Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.26.2, regarding the Ebionites’ view of Jesus’s birth:

“Those who are called Ebionites agree that the world was made by God; but their opinions with respect to the Lord are similar to those of Cerinthus and Carpocrates… they represent Him as having been the son of Joseph and Mary according to the ordinary course of human generation.”
